GlamourBox Unboxing: BYS Make Pro box

By now, everyone and their mother know that the Philippine beauty box scene is entering its annual “Special Edition” period. BDJBox unveiled a Revlon Special Edition Elite Box last month. I have a BDJ Elite Box purchase for September, but I know they usually send out towards the end of the month. I thought Glamourbox does the same; I’ve never actually preordered from them before so I had absolutely no idea.

Imagine my surprise when our condo security called me up to receive a delivery. I was sure I didn’t have anything getting shipped today. I even worked at home yesterday to ensure I received all my packages in the mail on a weekday. When I got the Xend package, I nearly died when I opened it because omgomgomg!! It’s the BYS Makeup Pro box!!

I was actually thinking of tweeting or instagramming Glamourbox yesterday to inquire when they were going to start deliveries, but I got my box today, so yay for me!

Since I have work today, I didn’t plan on opening any of the contents to swatch and test. Sunday’s usually my makeup playing day, but I couldn’t resist taking pretty pictures to show off.

Probably a quick intro on my experience with the BYS brand: I’ve never tried any of their products before. I’ve seen the BYS counter in SM Cubao all the time, whenever I’m prowling the Maybelline, Revlon and L’Oreal counters. But I have never actually walked up to the counters and tried to swatch any of the products. I’m generally drugstore-averse these days because I hoard so many high end makeup products, and I just generally like the quality of high end products. I knew the next Glamourbox was going to be BYS and I thought, hey, why not. If I end up really liking the product, SM Cubao is just 500 meters from my house and the brand was at a really good price point. Anyway, enough blabbing, and let’s get to the product!

My foray into lash extensions

So, here I am with my first beauty post since starting up blogging again, and the current beauty obsession I have is lash extensions. Yep, after i purchased a crap-ton of false lashes from Sasa last year (a whole bunch of which I haven’t even used), I decided that I’m too lazy to put those falsies on every time I wanted thick, long lashes, and, damn, I want thick, long lashes all the bloody time! Anyway, it was a random decision to get try it out. And, knowing me, once I’d made up my mind that I wanted to try it out, fuck-all if I would wait until the weekend. No, I went through google to find a salon near me coz I wanted lash extensions, stat!

Blogger Tag: Get to Know Me!

Hi to the 2 people who read my blog! I have a splitting headache from lack of sleep today, but I felt like doing a blog post and I thought it’d be fun to do a blogger tag, even though I don’t ever do tags. :p I read Emily of Beauty Broadcast. Her blog is the only one that I actually read because she’s the one of the few Youtubers who consistently update not just her channel, but also her blog. So, please go check out her awesome, informative blog, and I’m sure she will have a link to her awesome Youtube channel there too! So, highly recommend you go check that out, after I bore you with my tag answers 😀

1. Is your hair naturally curly or straight?
Stick straight and flat. I used to have really thick, wavy hair as a child. I got severely sick with typhoid fever when I was 12 or 13, and since then, my hair has grown straight.
2. Do you dye it yourself or go to a salon?
Back when I lived in Manila, I would get my hair dyed at the salon. Salon services are inexpensive in Manila, so I mean why would I bother doing my hair myself? When I moved to Singapore, where beauty services is ridiculously expensive, I now dye my hair myself. I use different box dyes, and even with my flat boring hair, my hair is crazy thick, so I need 2 boxes. The last one I used is Revlon Colorsilk ( I think that’s the name?)
3. Do you wear the same style everyday, or do you change it?
Yes, because I’m lazy. But I wear hair extensions, so that just totally changes my look, and I love it! When I’m feeling chippy, I may actually use a curling iron to curl my hair.
4. Do you do your own mani/pedi or go to a salon?
Neither. I have a lot of bad habits, and one of them is picking hang nails and my cuticles out (gross, I know). So my nails are almost always raw and gross and I never want things like polish remover near ’em.
5. How often do you change your nail polish?
Never; I don’t wear nail polish.
6. Do you polish your toes in the winter or just the summer?
We don’t have a winter in Singapore; here’s just hot and hotter. When I used to wear open-toed heeled shoes at work, I used to get a pedicure every 2 weeks. Now, since I wear pumps and boat shoes almost exclusively, I don’t feel the need to wear polish on my toe nails either.
7. How long does it take for you to put on makeup?
Depends on the day of the week. On weekdays, when I have limited time in the morning, it takes me about 40 minutes to do my face. If I wake up early, I’d also take another 20-30 minutes curling my hair.
8. What do you do first? Face or eyes?
I do my face first. I just find it weird doing my makeup without having put on foundation. My sequence is base/foundation first, brows, eyes, then cheeks and contouring.
9. Do you collect makeup or just buy what you need when you need it?
Makeup shopping is almost like a compulsion for me, so I really collect makeup.
10. How often do you wear false eyelashes?
Quite often. I wear lashes almost everyday at work. It’s pretty troublesome, not because it’s hard to get it on (which it is, let me tell you), but because I have oily lids and watery eyes, so my lashes almost always are half off by the time lunch time rolls around.
11. Do you do a full face of makeup everyday?
Yes. I cannot live without foundation, concealer, setting powder, at least some shadow to deepen my eye socket, my brow makeup, a lot of blush and bronzer (I love blush, bronze and highlight stuff!) and lipstick! I’m just a lady who likes to look really put together!
12. Do you wear makeup when you’re home alone or with family?
Yep. I like putting on my makeup and wearing my hair extensions and it doesn’t matter to me if I’m going out or not. That’s just the way I roll.
13. Will you leave the house without makeup?
Yes,but very rarely. People think I’m sick when they see me without makeup. -_-;; I don’t like the natural color of my lips and my brows are extremely sparse, so I just feel that I definitely do look gaunt and sick if I don’t at least fill in my brows and put a bit of lip color. My bare face isn’t as bad as before, when I used to smoke though.
14. How many high-end products do you have?
A lot. -_-;; I didn’t buy drugstore stuff until I started watching Emily’s channel. So if we were to look at my collection, I’d say 70% of the stuff I own is high end. Most drugstore stuff I have is confined to lipsticks and foundation.
15. Do you plan your OOTD every night or decide when you’re getting dressed?
I try to, but I don’t always do so. I work in a bank, so there are those days when I feel like “Oh, what’s the point, all my office clothes are so boring and staid anyway!”
16. How often do you change your handbag?
Once a week. I LOVE handbags! Like, I love it more now than I love shoes, and I used to really be a shoe lover. And because I have so many bags, I try to work with one bag a week, so I can get a good rotation of the bags that I have. My favourites are this English satchel style I have, and this mustard colored office bag I have. Both are  from Charles and Keith, which is a homegrown brand here in Singapore.
17. What time do you wake up and go to sleep?
I wake up at 6am. I have been having a sleeping problem lately, so I would lie down around midnight, but don’t fall asleep until around 2 or 3am.
18. How often or when do you workout?
I run 4-5km 3 times a week. I also swim laps on our pool (size is about half Olympic), and do 5 full laps each time. I only took up swimming lately, so I’m still working out on how to go longer without my arms aching like crazy the day after. And since I have a 9-6 job, I work out at night only. Saturdays are rest day. I used to do my long runs on Saturday mornings, but because of my sleeping problem, I’ve felt it’s more important for me to sleep in and catch a few more hours of zz’s.
19. Left handed or right handed?
Lefty represent!
20. How tall are you?
21. Do you speak any foreign languages?
Yep. My first language is Filipino (duh, since I’m Filipino). I don’t speak it, but I understand a fair bit of Malay and Mandarin too.
22. How many pets do you have?
I don’t have any pets here in Singapore. I live with my dad, and my dad doesn’t like the smell of animals. -_-;; In our house in Manila though, we have a mini-zoo. LOL My sister keeps 2 cats, my grandmother has lovebirds, we used to have rabbits and a golden retriever too. We had to adopt out the dog though, because as we all grew older and started moving out of the house, we didn’t want our poor dog not having anyone to walk her out on a daily basis.
23. How often are you on Blogger?
I am on WordPress :p And I’m here daily, about 10 or 5 minutes a day checking out my stats. lulz.
24. Do you read comments posted on blogs?
Yes, haha. I like reading comments on beauty blogs. I get good reading links going through the comments! I try not to read comments on news and lifestyle blogs though. There’s tons of ignorant, racist morons all over the place, especially on news blogs. So sad.
25. Do you keep a list of products to try as you see other posts?
Yup, I do. I have a little list of stuff to try saved on my Wunderlist. I’ve ticked all of them now. My last to-try list was only composed of clip-in hair extensions, and I’ve bought almost all of the stuff I wanted to try.
26. How did you come up with your blog name?
That’s me! I’m Mumu, and I thought it’d be so grand if I had my own corporation. Hence, Mumu, Inc.
27. What kind of camera do you use for your photographs?
I have a Samsung point and shoot, and my iPhone. That’s enough for me :p
28. How often do you clean your house?
I have zero domestic skills, so no, I never actually clean my room. My dad has a helper, and she cleans my room. I’m a spoiled brat. When I lived with my boyfriend, he’d be the one doing the cleaning most of the time (and that wasn’t all too often either).
29. What’s your favorite color?
30. Do you swear?
Not by a lot anymore. I have grown out of it. It just doesn’t sound refined or classy.
31. What are you doing with the rest of your day?
It’s 12:30am, so I’m going to try to get a bit of sleep. Tomorrow, I’ll be at work during the day, and going off to run at night.
Boy, that’s a long tag, but it’s fun to do! Tagging Setsuna, so she’ll update her blog. Dude, it’s been 3 months. :p

Review: Jewelove No. 5 Lashes

Hi everyone! So, I decided to come back real fast to try to review each of the eyelash sets I purchased from Zalora and Sasa before I forget my promise 🙂

The first set I tried was actually Dolly Wink, but I wanted to give that set another try some other time because the first time I put it on, the lash band poked at my left eye quite badly. I don’t know if it was because the lashes were not all that good or if I’m a moron who doesn’t know how to not hurt myself.

Anyway, I decided to review Jewelove No. 5, and I promise today’s post is going to be a real review, and not my usual half-assed commentary about how awesome I think everything is.

This is what the packaging looks like, and it's my very favorite!

This is what the packaging looks like, and it’s my very favorite!

Isn’t it pretty? I’m always drawn to the Jewelove eyelashes on the gyaru makeup display rack at Watsons because of of the pretty floral packaging. Just look at that pretty box and compare it to the bland-looking packaging that the current run of Dolly Winks, and more specially, the Ardell lashes, which have boring black packaging. I’m just really a sucker for florals, I guess.

I don’t have a any translation for the packaging, which is in Japanese, but I do recall the that the description on the Watsons packages said these are “Natural Soft and Fluffy” or something like that. And I must say, that is just spot on! It’s still a little on the long side if looked at sideways, but it’s so beautiful and natural nevertheless!

Up close and worn.

Up close and worn.

I love that pretty flare on the outer corner, and yet it looks so natural at parts where, really, eyelashes should be both short and sparse (inner corners).

Just pulls the look together so beautifully!

Just pulls the look together so beautifully!

I went with a really natural eye look with these lashes and I think they just work so well for work.

Boy, do I look cute or what?

My room is an awful mess in the morning, and my hair is flat every single workday -_-;;

I think I’ve also mentioned before that one of the things I really like about false lashes is how they retain the curve at the band after use and reuse. The Eyemazing lashes that I got were like this and Jewelove was the same, thought not to the same extent as the Eyemazing ones.

In sum:

  • Look: 5/5 – this is just perfect: fits the width of my eyelids just right, band isn’t too long, lash hairs are perfectly flared outward. Lash hairs are matte so none of that plastic-y look from cheap lashes.
  • Comfort: 5/5 – Besides Ardell, this is the first pair I’ve worn that didn’t bite into my skin.
  • Reusability: 4/5 – I find some hairs get slightly displaced when cleaning.
  • Packaging: 3/5 – I love that pretty floral box but I can’t stand that disgusting glue that these eyelash manufacturers use to stick the lashes to the box! WTF it’s so chunky and sticky and gross and so difficult to remove! I do like the fact that each pair is individually boxed in separate plastic compartments, so if I didn’t have a lash case, I could just carry the compartment in my makeup bag in case I wanna take the lashes off.
  • Price Point: 2/5 – If you buy this retail at brick and mortar stores in Singapore, it’s $22.90, and for 2 pairs, that’s a little steep, considering you can buy 3 pairs for $3 (price point of my Fashion Electricity practice lashes). I know the quality is just different, but for $11.45 per pair, I just think it’s atrocious. Best to buy this online from a retailer like Sasa. I got mine for $13.10 from there.

Overall Rating: 19/25

I don’t think that’s bad at all, considering I only had good things to say about this pair 🙂 Having said that, even if I just find this so pretty, if Sasa never sold this pair again, I would probably never repurchase because it’s just too expensive here in Singapore.

Ciao, folks! off to watch my Law and Order reruns!

Ciao, folks! off to watch my Law and Order reruns!

Japanese makeup haul, among other things.

In the past 2 weeks, I have seriously been on a false lashes kick. After the first experiment on New Year’s Eve, I realized it wasn’t really all that hard to put the falsies on. It was a little time-consuming, sure. But not that difficult. All in all, it adds 10-15 minutes more to my makeup routine, but then because the lashes I’ve been getting lately all look so dramatic, I have more often than not ended up toning down the eye makeup. That has resulted in a pretty good reduction of time spent doing my eyeshadow. So really, not much change in time consumed.

Anyway, because I’ve been so obsessed with false lashes, I’ve been getting a lot of high quality ones. And of course, what better quality is there than the Japanese false lashes? They’re the softest and have the most variety available. They’re also some of the most expensive. I’ve picked up a good number of sets, as well as some other makeup from various Japanese brands. These are all drugstore makeup, but wtf why are they so expensive?

Warning: Major pic spam ahead!

FOTD: Gyaru look for work

Really quick post while I’m waiting for my work emails to load. I decided to do a gyaru type look today, copying Tsubasa Masuwaka’s Dolly Wink Pink Brown eye look. I don’t have the Dolly Wink Pink Brown eye shadow set, so I used my Makeup Geek eyeshadows instead. These are
beautifully pigmented eyeshadows, really smooth and creamy, and they’re really inexpensive! I’ll link up that site later, when I get home, and also try to find a photo of the Tsubasa Masuwaka inspiration image. For cheeks, I used Milani Baked Mineral blush in Berry Amore. This just arrived in the mail yesterday, and I think its gorgeous (like me lulz). Too Faced Nude Beach La Creme lipstick, and NYX Frnech Kiss lip gloss to top it off.

And the last part to get that whole gyaru look put together: I tried out my Eyemazing half lashes! I’m loving it so far, but the lashes are really more on the dramatic side. I know it’s supposed to look more natural, with the brown and black mixture of hair, but because the lashes are so long, they look really dramatic on me. I’m loving it so far!

Besides that, I departed for a bit from my Benefit eyebrow kit and used new Dolly Wink brow pencil, powder and brow mascara. I thought these look really natural. Liking it a lot, even though it takes way more time than just putting on brow wax and powder.

I brought my camera to work today in the hopes of getting better photos, but the one I’m posting now was just taken with my iPhone front-facing camera – hence the not-so-spectacular quality.

And now, it’s time for me to dig into the 300+ emails. Ugh. Wish me luck. xo.

My false lashes experiment!

Happy New Year to the 2 people who read my blog! (That would be me and my sister :p)

So on the last day of 2012, I decided to finally break that boundary of makeup tricks that I thought I would never be able to do: I experimented with false lashes!

And the fateful experiment photo!

And the fateful experiment photo!

I think my application is still a little crooked, and because this was really a lazy girl’s experiment, you can even see in the bottom left photo where the false lashes end and where the real lashes begin :p

But just the mere fact that I even got the lashes to stay put on my eyelid is already a major achievement for me! I’ve never been able to do that before! Now, since I’m still on my learning stage, I’ve got some practice lashes which I play with every other night or so in order to train myself on how to handle them putting them in, removing, and cleaning up. But I’ve also decided to pick up some pricier (and prettier!) pairs to wear for weekends.

False Lashes Haul!

False Lashes Haul!

As you can see, I picked up 3 different sets:

  1. The first I got is the Ardell 120 Demi lashes. They’re beautifully natural looking. The somewhat uneven thickness and length makes it look so pretty and natural and I’m so excited to try them out! When I bought them, I thought about how I destroyed that pair I was wearing in the first photo after like the third time I practiced with it, and just thought to myself it would be unbearable if I were trying to put this on or clean it up and I accidentally destroyed it and I’d have no backups left! And so – numbers 2 and 3 were obtained today 😀 Oh, the Ardell lashes come a pair in each box and the price ranges from $8.95 – $10.50 (SGD!) I bought mine at Stardust, John Little, at Marina Square, where I got them 20%. Makes it not a bad deal!
  2. Eyemazing by Zipper (the lashes are called Amo Pastel in Type B) are brown half lashes with the same wispy-uneven-natural finish as the Ardell lashes, except they’re only half and they’re medium brown in color. I thought it would be a good exercise to try out half lashes and these came at 3 pairs for $21.90, so it wasn’t so expensive as to be highway robbery. because these are brown, I can’t put black mascara on my lashes to match them, so I got separate brown mascara, which I’ll show later.
  3. The one on the right that you see in the main haul picture is P-3 lashes from Jewelove. At 2 pairs for $22.90, these are the most expensive that I purchased. They appear to be wider at the band than the Ardell lashes, and the lash strands are also much longer, lending to probably a much more dramatic look than either the Ardell or the Eyemazing lashes. I bought these just for that oomph effect. I’m so excited to try these out!

Now, what haul would be complete without purchasing the peripheral supporting projects?

For my practice efforts, I’ve been using Spring Heart lash glue – it comes in this little pink tube, costs $3 and does the trick just well enough for me to actually be successful.

This was not a fluke, ok!

This was not a fluke, ok!

The problem I have with this product is I have mean squeeze-y fingers. That is, when I squeeze the tube to get product out, I squirt out way too much glue and that gets messy on the lash bone, and ends up matting on the base of the lashes. And that, my friends, was how I destroyed the practice lashes. It was way too much effort to pull the dried glue off when I was cleaning it for another go and I ended up pulling lash strands off the bone 😦

Anyway, because of that, I decided to pick up some better lash glue that applied with a wand. And of course, the aforementioned brown mascara to go with my brown lashes wtf. Plus some of that new Sweet Salon Bitter Chocolate eyeliner. I’m obsessed with that stuff. A year ago, I actually bought the Pink Brown Eyeliner and I don’t know if that was from Sweet Salon also, but it sure as hell had the same cutie patootie packaging.

I just like makeup, stfu.

I just like makeup, stfu.

Oh and I got myself a pair of eyelash applicators, because working with falsies with my clumsy fingers is just messy.

Now I can’t wait for the weekend to try this shit out and hopefully look way better than this:

I know it's experimental but hot damn, am I cute or what?

I know it’s experimental but hot damn, am I cute or what?

Happy New Year, folks! I can’t wait to show up with much better lashes than I did back in 2012 😉
